December 2024
On December 15, the Somali Health Board in Tukwila hosted a car seat awareness class for local Somali childcare providers. They learned about Washington State law, how to choose a correct car seat for a child, how to install the seat, and how to fit the child in the seat. Written materials were provided in both English and Somali, and a Somali language car seat video was included (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlqcijsC_7o) during the class. Not only did the childcare providers have many excellent questions, but they also talked about challenges they face with families who are unfamiliar with car seats, and how they could share what they learned with families. Their goal is to eventually host classes for families in their community and send someone to the technician class so that they can continue to advocate for child safety in their community.
